The River Abiseo National Park is an UNESCO World Heritage Site for Culture and Nature. It covers an area of more than 2,500 square kilometers, contains 7 separate protected areas, each having a wide diversity of flora and fauna. Since exploration was undertaken in 1985, more than 1000 species of flora has been identified, 300 species of mammals, amphibians, reptiles and fish (18 of which are at risk of extinction and 12 were discovered new to science). The River Abiseo National Park contains rare mammals such as the yellow tail monkey, the Andean bear and 5 species of sloths. In addition, 36 previously unknown Pre-Inca archeological sites have been uncovered.
